THE SENIOR SCHOOL

The aim of  The Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School is to develop in every pupil a sense of her own self worth, respect for others and a desire fully to realise her own individual potential. Stress is laid within the school upon a Christian ethos, but all girls are encouraged both to understand and to respect other faiths. Girls of all races and religions have traditionally been welcomed as part of the school community. Not only do we seek to enable girls to achieve their full potential in academic and other fields, but we encourage them to think for themselves; to become confident in their own ability and to learn to work as responsible team members in school and in the wider community. We aim to provide a secure, happy family atmosphere and believe this is a positive benefit in achieving our excellent  results .  It is the friendliness of Church High School, together with its insistence upon high standards of work, behaviour and appearance, which most readily characterises it and upon which its reputation is founded.

Main BuildingThe Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School is a girls independent day school founded in 1885 which enjoys a reputation for combining the pursuit of academic excellence with provision of a caring environment in which all pupils are valued as individuals. The school is situated in the leafy suburb of Jesmond within easy walking distance of the City Centre and enjoys excellent access by public transport particularly the Tyneside Metro System. The school buildings themselves are a mixture of the traditional and the modern. The main building dates from 1890 and expansion of the school in 1974 which was further extended in 1994. Purpose built science laboratories were opened to celebrate the school's centenary in 1985. Within the grounds are a number of all-weather tennis and netball courts and the school playing fields are adjacent to the grounds. Four further buildings complete the school. Tankerville House immediately across the road offers the sixth form first class study facilities as well as a comfortable common room and a kitchen. Next door is Westward House, acquired in 1993, containing a beautifully equipped nursery as well as additional teaching space. Just up the road is Gurney House, accommodating home economics and art facilities as well as a speech and drama studio. The music department is in 1 Haldane Terrace.

We believe it is a great benefit to the girls having all the school buildings on one campus. It generates a friendly atmosphere with all the girls well known to each other and to the staff. The younger girls do not find the transition up the school in any way daunting as they are well accustomed to the buildings and indeed are often able to use the senior facilities. The older girls are encouraged to help with the younger ones and this develops their patience, understanding and community spirit. With approximately 680 girls in the school, of whom some 300 are in the junior school and 90 in the Sixth Form, it is possible to maintain an excellent staff - pupil ratio enabling the girls to receive close individual attention at all levels in the school. The school maintains high standards of academic excellence: percentage pass rates at both GCSE and A Level are usually in the nineties and almost all Sixth Form pupils gain admittance to higher education.
