MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics Department consists of four specialist teachers, three full time and one part time.  During the first three years (years 7, 8 and 9) girls follow Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum and are taught in sets according to ability.  In years 10 and 11 all girls follow the GCSE course at either Higher or Intermediate level and all are subsequently entered for the GCSE examinations.  Results at GCSE have been consistently good with a pass rate (Grades A* to C) normally over 95% and a good proportion of high grades.  In 1997 the pass rate was 98% with 35% at A*/A and 48% at B grade.  We do try to teach weaker pupils in smaller groups during these two years.

In the Sixth Form we offer AS and A level modular courses.  For several years the pass rate here has been 100%, again with a good proportion of high grades.  In 1997 seven out of our nine students gained grade A.

Extra curricular activities include participation in the UK Mathematical Challenge in years 8 and 10, and a short series of lunchtime activities for years 8 and 9.

Each June we take year 9 on a Mathematical Trial Outing to Lightwater Valley, and this leads on to group project work.
