We follow the National Curriculum for History. In addition to the compulsory Core Units, our choices for the Optional Units are “Black Peoples of the Americas” (studied in Year 7) & “Britain and the French Revolution” (studied in Year 8). 
 

Key Stage 4

History is a popular option for students. The Syllabus we follow is one 
offered by the  NEAB  - The Modern World (Syllabus B). The Core Units for Paper One involve a broad sweep across the 20th Century World, from the trenches of the First World War to the Oval Office in the White House during the Cuba Missile crisis. On Paper 2 our choices are to study 2 “Governments in Action”, namely Britain 1905-1951 and Germany 1919-1939. 
 

Sixth Form

The Syllabus studied for A level is Syllabus 9020 offered by UCLES. This covers a range of topics from the late 15th to the early 17th centuries in both English and European history. 
 

General

History teaching involves extensive use of video material, and I.T. skills where appropriate. All Year groups are involved in visits to a variety of  places of interest. Year 7 students take part in a number of medieval workshops at Carlisle Castle, whilst Hartlepool Historic Quay is the venue for Year 8 in search of the true “feel” of life in Nelson’ navy. The real sights, sounds and smells of the Second World War are experienced by Year 9 at Eden Camp Museum. G.C.S.E. students travel to The Royal Armouries at Leeds to participate in First World War workshops, and A level students visit Durham and attend lectures run by organisations such as Sovereign Education as part of their course.
